  • In-Home Assessments: A social worker visits your home to understand your needs and those of the person you care for. They'll work with you to create a personalized care plan and suggest helpful resources.
  • Caregiver Flex Account: This unique program allows you to get reimbursed for approved caregiving expenses, like hiring a temporary caregiver to give you a break (respite care).
  • Telephone Support Groups: Connect with other caregivers in a comfortable space to share experiences, learn from each other, and gain valuable insights.
  • Educational Programs: The DCCI offers workshops and seminars on various topics related to caregiving, such as stress management, home care techniques, and navigating insurance programs (Medicare and Medicaid).
  • Caregiving Counseling Services: A social worker provides confidential counseling and advice to help you cope with the emotional challenges of caregiving.

Qualification for the DCCI program

The DCCI program is designed for unpaid family caregivers who are residents of Washington, D.C.  Here are the specific eligibility requirements:

Age requirements

The person you care for must be 60 years or older.

Residency

Anyone can benefit from the DCCI's educational programs. Whether you're a caregiver, a community member, or simply interested in learning more, their programs are open to all. Residency and caregiving status don't matter – all are welcome to participate.

Health requirements 

Need Level: At least two of the following must apply:

  • The care recipient requires assistance due to a mental or physical disability (like Alzheimer's or dementia).
  • The care recipient has a low to middle income.
  • Caring for your loved one creates stress for you.
  • Without your help, they would need to be placed in a nursing home.
  • You need help managing your caregiving responsibilities.

Financial requirements 

The DCCI's financial assistance program has specific requirements. It's intended for caregivers facing financial hardship due to caregiving responsibilities. Your caregiving role must create a financial burden for you to qualify for their financial aid.

How to apply for the District of Columbia Caregivers Institute

There's a waitlist for the DCCI program, so it's best to apply early. Here's how to get started:

  1. Call the DCCI: Contact them at 202-464-1513 to learn more and request an application.
  2. Submit your application: Complete the application with the right documents (e.g., Financial records, driver's license) and return it to the DCCI.
  3. Wait for notification: Once funding becomes available, the DCCI will contact you to schedule an orientation meeting.
  4. Attend orientation: This mandatory meeting will explain the program details, services available, and how to use the Caregiver Flex Account.
  5. In-home assessment: A social worker will visit your home to assess your needs and develop a personalized care plan.
